The water that the baby is surrounded (amniotic fluid) is actually fetal urine that's swallowed and then passed through the fetus's renal system and excreted again during pregnancy. It's sterile urine. The amniotic fluid also bathes the baby's lungs when the baby "inhales" it, which helps the lungs to mature properly.
